Motivating Nearly 2,000 Students at Kingston College
Starting college is a huge moment in a young person’s life. New environment, new people, new expectations and more independence. And, for many students, a completely new level of responsibility. That is why Cameron Parker was invited to Kingston College a part of the South Thames College Group to deliver a series of induction talks to close to 2,000 students, helping them start their college journey with greater motivation, confidence and clarity.
As a motivational speaker for colleges and secondary schools, Cameron’s goal is never simply to make students feel motivated for an hour. The real aim is to challenge how young people think, encourage them to raise their standards and, most importantly, help them turn their ambitions into action.
Starting the College Journey with the Right Mindset
Throughout the induction talks, Cameron spoke openly and honestly with students about ambition, self-belief, standards and personal responsibility. The sessions challenged students to think about what they want from the next stage of their lives and the actions required to get there. There is a big difference between wanting something and consistently doing the things required to achieve it. For students beginning college, that can mean turning up, engaging in lessons, asking for help, making good decisions, responding to setbacks and developing habits that move them towards their goals. The response throughout the sessions was fantastic, but what happened afterwards demonstrated the impact even more.
“The best speaker they have ever had”
Following the event, one member of staff described Cameron as the best speaker they had ever had. Another member of the Kingston College team followed up by email:
“The sessions were amazing and the response we have had from both staff and students has been incredible! You have made a big impact on the start of their journey at college.”
For Cameron and Dreams 2 Reality, feedback like this matters because the objective goes far beyond delivering an entertaining motivational talk. The goal is impact and some of the most powerful feedback came directly from the students themselves.
What Kingston College Students Said
After the talks, Cameron received a huge number of messages from students who wanted to share what they had taken from the sessions.
One student wrote:
“Thank you so much for the talk. Your words of encouragement and your advice was much needed and I will do my best to put it into practice so I can achieve my dreams and aspirations.”
Another student, who spoke to Cameron about their ambition to succeed in rugby, said:
“Absolute legend man. I am the kid that had the England Rugby top on. I’m gonna put your words into action man. I won’t quit on this Rugby dream. Your words helped a lot. God bless you.”
Another simply wanted to express their appreciation:
“Thank you for the talk, much appreciated.”
One student commented on Cameron’s ability to communicate and connect with the audience:
“Hi Cameron, I was in your talk at Kingston College today. Just wanted to say you’re an amazing public speaker… Keep doing what you’re doing and inspiring young people.”
Another said:
“Hi, I have no questions. I just wanted to say that your speech was very good today.”
While another student described just how engaged they had been throughout the session:
“Thank you so much for coming to talk to us and being so engaging. I had my hand up every 5 minutes.”
From Motivation to Action
Perhaps the most important feedback came from students explaining not simply that they enjoyed the talk, but that it had made them think differently about themselves.
One student wrote:
“I watched your motivational speech yesterday and it was amazing… I kinda related to it… it really touched my heart.”
Another explained how the session had changed the way they were thinking about their own potential:
“It really put into perspective how much faith I need to put in myself to do better and not second guess or doubt myself. You have given me the courage to just do my best and try hard at everything I do while looking at things with a high standard.”
That is exactly where motivational speaking can have its greatest value. Inspiration can create a moment, but action is what creates change. If a young person leaves a session thinking differently about their standards, their education or what they believe they are capable of, the next step is helping them translate that thinking into what they actually do.
Motivational Speaking for College Students
College students are at an important transition point. They are beginning to make decisions that can influence university, apprenticeships, employment and their wider future, while also experiencing greater freedom and responsibility. Effective motivational speaking for college students therefore needs to go beyond telling young people to “believe in themselves”. Cameron’s approach combines motivation with practical conversations around mindset, standards, resilience, ambition, responsibility and taking action.
The Kingston College induction talks provided an opportunity to have those conversations with almost 2,000 young people at the very beginning of their college journey. The messages received afterwards showed that students did not just listen.
They reflected, they connected and most importantly, many of them left wanting to take action.
Bringing Dreams 2 Reality into Colleges
Dreams 2 Reality works with schools and colleges across the UK, delivering motivational talks, workshops, targeted interventions, mentoring and longer-term programmes. Every setting is different, which is why sessions can be designed around the students, year groups and priorities of the organisation.
For Kingston College, the focus was clear: help students begin the next chapter of their education with ambition, confidence and higher standards. Nearly 2,000 students later, the feedback from both staff and young people spoke for itself.
A powerful start to their college journey, now the challenge is turning that motivation into action.
