Before we can expect young people to thrive academically, they first need to feel like they belong. It sounds simple, but it raises an important question. How can we expect students to engage in learning if they don’t feel safe, valued or connected to the school around them? Throughout the conversation, Keziah challenges many of the assumptions that dominate modern education. From behaviour systems and school uniform policies to attendance, curriculum and leadership, she argues that schools should focus less on control and more on creating environments where every child feels seen and valued.

Belonging isn’t about lowering standards, in fact, it’s the opposite.

When students feel psychologically safe, respected and understood, they are far more likely to attend school, engage in lessons and build positive relationships with staff and their peers. High expectations and strong relationships are not competing ideas, they work best together.

The discussion also explores why so many young people appear disconnected from education today. Rising mental health concerns, declining attendance and increasing levels of anxiety suggest that many students are struggling with far more than just academic pressure. For school leaders, the challenge is finding the balance. Structure matters, consistency matters and clear expectations matter.

    But so does Kindness!

The most effective schools don’t simply create compliance; they create cultures where students genuinely want to be there. That starts with adults who build trust, show empathy and create environments where mistakes become opportunities to learn rather than reasons to disengage.

One particularly powerful part of the conversation focuses on the idea of mattering. Every young person wants to know that someone notices when they’re absent, someone cares when they’re struggling and someone believes they can succeed.

When that happens, attendance improves. Confidence grows. Behaviour often improves naturally because students begin to see school as somewhere they belong rather than somewhere they have to survive.

For teachers, parents and school leaders alike, this episode serves as a reminder that education is about far more than exam results. Academic success remains important, but the conditions that allow young people to achieve must come first.

If we want better outcomes, we must first build better environments. Sometimes the biggest change we can make isn’t introducing another policy or intervention.

It’s making every child feel that they matter.
