How to Maximise Opportunities – Advice for Teenagers – The discussion around ‘opportunity’ is a conversation that continues to arise within my sessions. I believe the majority of people will be faced with a great opportunity at some point in their lives.

However, opportunities are rarely maximised. I believe this comes down to a lack of preparation, or experience. Before I continue with this short blog, watch the video below:

The quote I am referring to in the video is from motivational speaker Les Brown. I was power phrasing, but for reference here is one of my favourite quotes:

“It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one, than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.”

I believe we need to spend more time working on our skills, developing our character and mastering habits that help us achieve the results we desire. That sounds extremely cliche, but it is true. For example, students will always tell me the huge goals they have. This is great, but my next question is simple “Who do you need to become to achieve that goal?”

It allows us to look at things different. We start seeing the pursuit to success as a journey instead of a destinations. It will provide us with an opportunity to take control and make small improvements everyday.

What’s the alternative? Imagine flopping having a huge opportunity, simply because we didn’t do the work prior. This can impact future opportunities, but more importantly have a significant impact on our own well-being and self worth.

There is so much I can discuss and this blog isn’t the place for that, yet. I just wanted to highlight this important topic in the video above. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. When was the last time you maximised an opportunity? Have you ever ruined an opportunity because you was under prepared?
