Tackling the NEET Crisis Starts with Action – The conversation around the growing NEET crisis has never been louder. More young people are finding themselves Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET), leaving schools, parents and employers asking the same question:

How do we prepare young people for life beyond the classroom? (Before we answer the question, watch the video below)

Tackling the NEET Crisis Starts with Action, Not Just Aspiration

At Dreams 2 Reality, we’ve had boots on the ground in schools for years, working directly with students to bridge the gap between education and employment. While there are many complex reasons why young people become NEET, one thing has become increasingly clear: many students have aspirations, but they haven’t yet connected those aspirations to the actions needed to achieve them.

A recent moment during one of our programmes summed this up perfectly. (Video above) Rather than sending another online application and hoping for the best, a student picked up the phone and contacted an employer directly to ask about work experience. It might sound like a small step, but for many young people, it is a huge leap outside their comfort zone. That is where confidence is built. One of the phrases I use constantly with students is:

“You can’t have World Cup expectations with Sunday League planning, preparation and work ethic. There’s a disconnect.”

It usually gets a smile, but it also gets students thinking. Many young people dream of successful careers, financial freedom or owning their own business. There is nothing wrong with those ambitions. The challenge is that ambition alone isn’t enough. Success comes from the daily habits, communication skills, resilience and willingness to take action long before the opportunities arrive.

That is why our work has never been about standing at the front of a hall telling students to “believe in yourself.” Motivation without action fades quickly.

Instead, we help students build confidence by taking practical steps. Whether that’s making a phone call, introducing themselves to an employer, preparing for an interview, writing a CV or securing work experience, every small action builds momentum. Those experiences develop the confidence and employability skills that employers are looking for and can help reduce the risk of young people becoming NEET.

One of the most encouraging parts of this work is the feedback we receive from teachers. Time and time again, staff tell us that they see students doing things they never thought they would. They describe quieter students finding their voice, disengaged learners becoming more proactive, and young people leaving sessions with greater confidence, purpose and direction. For many teachers, the biggest change isn’t simply motivation, it’s seeing students take ownership of their future.

Preparing young people for employment isn’t about inspiring them for one afternoon. It’s about giving them the mindset, skills and confidence to take the next step.

Because careers aren’t built through wishful thinking. They’re built through action. We had an incredible response from education, here is what people said about the video and tackling the NEET crisis –

“Excellent message – and fully on board with the World Cup/Sunday League mentality. Have heard Cameron Parker say this before and it resonates…” – Ben Stirling-Turner from Chew Valley School Bristol.

“Fully agree with everything you raise here…..especially “we show them how….and that happens through action”! Great work 🙏🏼🙏🏼👏🏼 – Trystan Williams from Beyond Expectations Education

“Love this Cam! Too often we focus on outcomes without giving young people the practical tools and experiences needed to get there. Teaching students to pick up the phone, have conversations, handle rejection, and create opportunities for themselves is invaluable. Great to see the work you’re doing to bridge that gap and show young people that confidence isn’t something you wait for – it’s something you build through taking action. Keep making a difference! 💙” – Jay Adhyaru from OuttaReach

“Keep at it mate, you’re doing massively important work for young people” – Nathan Marr from Semester Student Planner

“Love it!! We need more people like you in this world 👏🏽” – Alisna Magar from Ingeus

Could not agree more! Students need to know the difference between realistic and unrealistic goals linking them to their capabilities. The work you are doing is inspiring!” – Sammy Chishty from Future Ready

“💯 Cameron. I completely agree—our young people need genuine, sustained support and practical steps to navigate these transitions successfully, rather than just warm words. Tremendous work that you are doing, and it’s making a real difference ♥️” – James Blomfield from HOPE

“Top post Cam this resonates so much. One of the biggest challenges we face is helping young people understand that aspirations alone are not enough. Ambition is important, but ambition without action is just a wish. What I love about this example is that it develops something far more valuable than a work experience placement. It develops confidence, resilience, communication skills and the courage to put yourself out there. Too often we hear young people say they want a particular career, but nobody has shown them the practical steps needed to get there. That’s where schools, employers and communities have such an important role to play. The students who thrive are often the ones who learn to make the call, send the email, ask the question and keep going when they hear “no”. Real opportunities are created when we stop doing things for young people and start helping them do things for themselves. Great work Cameron. More of this is exactly what our young people need.” – Carl Heatley from Copley Academy

There you have it, we hope you enjoyed this blog. We also understand there is not a 1 size fits all approach.
