Leadership Lessons from Lord Marvin Rees OBE – Leadership is easy to judge from the outside. Whether it’s in schools, business or politics, people often see the decisions but rarely understand the journey that shaped the person making them.

In the latest episode of The School Podcast, Cameron Parker sits down with Lord Marvin Rees OBE for one of the most open and thought-provoking conversations we’ve ever recorded.

Most people know Marvin as the first elected Mayor of Bristol and now a member of the House of Lords. But long before the titles, he was a young boy growing up in Easton, Bristol, navigating poverty, racism, uncertainty and the feeling that life wasn’t offering many opportunities.

Throughout the conversation, Marvin reflects honestly on those early years and the people who changed his direction. Teachers who believed in him. Coaches who gave him discipline through boxing. His faith, his family and his community all played a role in helping him see a future that once felt impossible.

One of the biggest themes throughout the episode is hope.

Not false hope, but genuine belief that circumstances do not have to define someone’s future. It’s a message that resonates deeply with anyone working with young people today. Too often we focus on behaviour, attendance or academic outcomes without first understanding the experiences that shape them.

Marvin also speaks candidly about leadership itself.

Leading a city like Bristol meant making decisions that were often unpopular, facing criticism from every direction and carrying responsibility during some incredibly challenging moments. From discussions around social mobility to the debate surrounding the Colston statue, he explains why leadership isn’t about pleasing everyone—it’s about making decisions based on values, even when they’re difficult.

For teachers, school leaders and parents, there are countless takeaways. The importance of relationships. The influence one adult can have on a young person’s life. Why resilience isn’t something we’re born with but something that develops through challenge. And why education has the power to completely alter the trajectory of someone’s future.

At Dreams 2 Reality, we often talk about helping young people recognise that where they start doesn’t determine where they finish. Marvin’s story is living proof of that.

This isn’t simply a conversation about politics or Bristol.

It’s a conversation about people, purpose, opportunity and the responsibility we all have to give young people hope.

A huge thank you to our sponsor, Nisai Learning, for making conversations like this possible and continuing to support schools and young people across the UK and beyond.

If you haven’t listened yet, this is an episode that will leave you thinking long after it finishes.
